AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. Every year, approximately 75,000 AmeriCorps members serve organizations in communities across the United States. Individuals who serve through AmeriCorps receive a monthly living stipend and, at the end of their service term, an education award they can use to cover the costs of college or graduate school.
AmeriCorps is an excellent post-graduate option for students of all majors. AmeriCorps members gain valuable experience while building their professional networks and earning money they can use to repay student loans or further their education at eligible higher education institutions.
Most AmeriCorps terms are one year, providing the perfect “gap year” experience for recent college graduates. Some individuals who choose to serve with AmeriCorps know exactly what they want to do when they complete their term of service, while others use their service term to discern next steps.
There are three types of AmeriCorps positions available for young adults: State and National, VISTA, and NCCC. A fourth branch, AmeriCorps Seniors, is only open to individuals 55 and older.
